Why 'She'll Be Right' Won't Cut It in an Emergency

How to be both compliant and prepared when facing a disaster or emergency

Emergency and Disaster Management in the NDIS Sector

Australia is no stranger to natural disasters. From bushfires and floods to cyclones and heatwaves, the impact on individuals, communities, and essential services can be devastating. Right now, many regions are grappling with the fallout of severe weather events, and my thoughts are with everyone affected.

For NDIS providers, these events don’t just disrupt services - they test the very foundation of organisational preparedness. Are your policies and procedures robust enough to ensure continuity of care? Do your workers know exactly what to do when an emergency hits? Most importantly, are your participants supported, safe, and informed when they need it most?

The Ripple Effect of Disasters on Service Provision

Disasters don’t just cause immediate logistical challenges - they create long-term complications for service delivery. Providers may struggle with:

  • Staffing shortages due to displacement, illness, or personal circumstances.
  • Communication breakdowns affecting participants, families, and support networks.
  • Supply chain disruptions impacting medication, equipment, and essential resources.
  • Increased participant vulnerability, particularly for those with complex needs.
  • Emotional and mental health impacts on workers and participants alike.

While no one can prevent a disaster, you can prepare for one. Emergency and disaster management isn’t just about ticking a compliance box - it’s about protecting the people who rely on your services.

Your Role in Emergency and Disaster Readiness

So, what should your organisation be doing to meet both regulatory requirements and real-world challenges? A strong emergency and disaster management framework should include:

  • A clear and practical Emergency Management Plan (that’s actually used, not just filed away!).
  • Risk assessments that factor in participant vulnerabilities and service risks.
  • Staff training so everyone knows their role in an emergency.
  • Communication strategies to keep participants and families informed.
  • Business continuity planning to ensure essential services can continue.
  • Regular testing and drills to identify gaps before a real emergency does.
