Rules, Signs & Speeding Fines

Why Policies Alone Aren’t Enough

Having a Policy is Like a Speed Limit - Without Proof of Compliance, It’s Just a Sign on the Side of the Road

Ever had a speed limit change in your area?

Recently, the council dropped the speed limit on a main road through my estate by 10 km/h. I completely agree with the change - it’s a busy area, often used as a shortcut, so the lower speed makes sense for safety and traffic flow.

But here’s the thing…

  • It’s easy to forget. Even with the new signs, years of habit mean I sometimes catch myself coasting along at the old speed (oops!).
  • Some drivers ignore it completely, speeding past and even making ahem “expressive” hand gestures to those who follow the new limit.
  • Despite the rule change, without reinforcement - reminders, enforcement, or consequences - many people simply stick to their old ways.

And that’s exactly why policies alone aren’t enough.

A Policy Without Action is Just a Sign No One Follows

Many NDIS providers treat policies and procedures as their compliance safety net, assuming that having them in place means they’re covered. But when auditors come knocking, they’ll always look beyond the documents.

NDIS Auditors want to see:
How policies are put into practice – Are staff actually following them?
How well they’re understood – Can workers explain key procedures when asked?
How they result in better outcomes for participants – Are they making a real difference?

Because without additional evidence to back up your policies, auditors can’t truly confirm your compliance.

It’s like trying to convince a police officer you weren’t speeding - just because there’s a speed limit sign!

Let’s Make Compliance More Than Just a Sign on the Road

Just like speed limits, policies only work when people follow them (and remember them when they change). So let’s make sure your compliance is backed by action, evidence, and real impact - not just paperwork.
